SCHOOL RUGBY
SCHOOL RUGBY
Not everyone who went to SMSS played rugby. But rugby had a big influence on all students regardless, and this is not an understatement.
During our time in SMSS, rugby was like what baseball is to the Americans or cricket is to the British. It can be considered as a priority sport. The school too took a special interest in the development of rugby. I am not sure whether rugby still dominates the scene in SMSS now.
But back then, rugby had a special place in the hearts and minds of the citizens of SMSS.
Rugger players were like gladiators. They had to undergo rigorous training week in and week out. During tournament seasons, special food was prepared for them at the 'Dewan Makan'. I think it was chicken soup and bread (or was it biscuits? I can't remember).
There were those who did not play the game, but still participated in the training exercises, simply to keep fit.
And of course the cheering squad. Well, come to think of it, everyone who didn't play for the school team cheered the rugger boys every time they had the chance.
For away matches with known rivals, like RMC or the Victoria Institution, busses did not only bring players but also accommodated the 'cheering squad'. There were many cheering tunes that were taught and rehearsed. Even till today, I can still hum a few of those tunes. The one I like the most was "Lan Ngocheng Ada Hantu Jembalang".
In 1980, (we were in form three at that time), if I am not mistaken, both the school's Under 15 and the Under 20 teams won as Selangor Champions. The school headmaster even declared a holiday the day after the celebrations.
Such was the influence of Rugby back then.
I did not know how and why rugby occupied such a central role in SMSS. Some say it was due to a certain teacher, from Scotland, who came and taught in SMSS for a number of years. He taught Math (i think) under a certain inter-governmental program sanctioned by our authorities. His name is Ian Gordan.
I have heard stories that it was Ian Gordan who introduced the sport to the school because he was a rugger player back in Scotland and was keen to introduce this sport to SMSS.
And Rugby took off in SMSS under the stewardship of Ian Gordan.
Now, I don't know. I haven't been to the school for ages. I heard the school has an orchestra and is quite good at it. Winning competitions here and there.

Disco songs
TOP TEN DISCO SONGS (1975 to 1980):
The disco movement had occupied a considerable period of our adolescent life. Disco was not merely about a distinctive style of music, it also came together with a recognisable fashion idiosyncrasies. The afro hairdo, platform shoes, and tight fitting shirts with oversized collars . The film that best capture the image of this era was probably the musical hit called Saturday Night Fever, starring the young John Travolta. But as the seventies wound down, so did Disco. By the early eighties Disco was no longer fashionable as the youngsters ushered in the era of punk rock and the 'new wave'. For whatever it's worth, here are some of the disco tunes we were familiar with:
10. Play that funky music (Wild Cherry)
9. That's the way (I like it) [KC and the Sunshine Band]
8. Ring My Bell (Anita Ward)
7. Rasputin (Boney M)
6. Last Dance (Donna Summer)
5. Dont stop till you get enough (Michael Jackson)
4. Funkytown (Lipps Inc)
3. Le Freak (Chic)
2. Boogie Wonderland (Earth, Wind and Fire)
1. Stayin' Alive (Bee Gees)
Honourable Mention:
Too many tunes to list here, from so many artists of the late seventies, like Barry Manilow with his song called Copacabana, the Bee Gees, Earth wind and fire, Chic, Boney M, Peaches&Herbs and many more.

Pesan dari sahabatku Ramlan
EMPAT PERKARA SEBELUM TIDUR WALAU SESIBUK MANAPUN DENGAN TUGAS HARIAN
Rasulullah berpesan kepada siti Aisyah ra.
“ Ya, Aisyah! Jangan engkau tidur sebelum melakukan empat perkara yaitu :
1. Sebelum khatam al-Quran.
2. Sebelum menjadikan para nabi bersyafaat untukmu di hari kiamat.
3. Sebelum para muslimin meredhai engkau.
4. Sebelum engkau melaksanakan haji dan umrah".
Bertanya Siti Aisyah :
“Ya Rasulullah ! bagaimana aku dapat melaksanakan empat perkara seketika? “
Rasulullah tersenyum dan bersabda :
1. “Jika engkau akan tidur, bacalah surah al –Ikhlas tiga kali
Seakan-akan engkau telah meng-khatamkan Al-Quran
” Bismillaahirrahmaa nirrahiim,
‘Qul huallaahu ahad’ Allaah hussamad’
lam yalid walam yuulad’
walam yakul lahuu kufuwan ahad’ ( 3x ) “
2. "Bacalah shalawat untukku dan untuk para nabi sebelum aku" maka kami semua akan memberimu syafaat di hari kiamat
“ Bismillaahirrahmaa nirrrahiim, Allaahumma shallii ‘alaa saiyyidina Muhammad wa’alaa aalii saiyyidina Muhammad ( 3x ) “
3. “Beristighfarlah” untuk para mukminin maka mereka akan meredhai engkau
“ Astaghfirullaah hal 'adziim al lazhii laa ilaaha illaa huwal hayyul qayyuum wa atuubu ilaih ( 3x )
4. Dan perbanyaklah “bertasbih, bertahmid , bertahlil dan bertakbir” maka seakan-akan engkau telah melaksanakan ibadah haji dan umrah
“ Bismillaahirrahmaa nirrrahiim
Subhanallaah Walhamdulillaah Walaa ilaaha illallaah hu wallah hu akbar "
( 3x )
آمِيّنْ..

MOST CELEBRATED SONGS IN THE DORMITORIES OF SMSS (Block A & B) FROM 1978 TO 1982:
First of all, I do not know what music the girls listened to in Block C. I've never been there ... honest ... really ... I do not know. (Why am I saying this twice?)
Maybe the girls followed regulations and never boomed away with their cassette players. I don't even know whether they kept cassette players in their dormitories back then.
This is the reason why I confine myself to Blocks A and B only. All right, block D too. But kids rarely go there. There was an apparent age gap between block d inhabitants and the rest. They appeared very "adultish" and looked too serious and boring. Unlike blocks A and B which were joined at every level by a common walk-ways and staircases, bloc d was isolated, on its own. As a consequence, block d was, to the most part of my experience, quite insignificant.
Blocks A and B are a different story. Cassette players aplenty. It was common to hear sounds from the cassette players deafening at full volume as you walk the corridors of these blocs.
Between 1978 and 1982 many great songs have bounced off the walls of these two blocks. I list bellow what I personally feel as the most popular songs in those blocks:
10. All Out Of Love (Air Supply)
9. Widuri (Broery Marantika)
8. Kenangan Lalu (Flybaits)
7. Geram (Black Dog Bone)
6. Aku Penganggur (Sudirman)
5. Hati Emas (Kembara)
4. Kamelia (Sweet Charity)
3. Apo Nak Dikato (Blues Gang)
2. Rindu Bayangan (Carefree)
1. Hingga Akhir Nanti (Alleycats)
Honourable mention:
Andainya Aku Pergi Dulu (Alleycats), Sejuta Wajah (Sweet Charity), Belaian Jiwa (Carefree), Khayalan, Si Gadis Ayu and Relax (Black Dog Bone).
